I have a lot of domains and to be honest many of them have never been used. I used to think it was crap to buy a domain and not at least build a page on it so I had a lot of single page website pointing to some program or maybe just linking back to one of my primary sites.

These domains are nice premium keyword domains with long term value which I am just holding on to and not interested in building some big business under at the moment. I went through a phase there for a while where I was building some splogs or spammy style blogs and using content pulled from various rss feeds to populate articles in WordPress but those got old fast. I came out with a few DMCA notices and very little revenue from the large amounts of useless traffic generated.

Maybe I was using the wrong revenue programs or maybe I wasn’t building enough links but whatever the case splogs were not big money maker for me. Of the domains with no content I actually had a few dozen that were dead sites and pointed to either empty directories on the server because I never got around to building a site or even worse they still pointed at some silly template at the registrar because I never even updated the DNS after purchasing the domains. Some of these go back to 2004 when I bought a load of domains and never built them up.

Every once in awhile someone makes an offer to buy one of my domains and I’ll sell it but to be honest I was looking for an easy revenue program that required nothing on my part. Over the years I had heard about paid parking programs for domains but many of them required you to make a payment to join the program or you had to pay them some huge percentage of revenue that seemed ludicrous to me. I just did not agree that I should have to pay my own money in order to promote my domains with your program. The real value is in the keywords of my domains and if they are generating clicks with no content why should I pay you a portion of that?

I steered clear of paid parking programs and focused instead on content development and revenue programs related to the domain niche when possible. Recently I decided to boost my usage of Google Adsense after ripping the ads out of most of my sites two years ago. I felt the conversions on Google ads was weak and I tried some other niche specific programs but these required to much maintenance and the difference in revenue was negligible. I was making more money but it took me more effort which sucks when you’re lazy like me.

While creating ads for my sites I was reminded that Google offers their Adsense for Domains now and I figured it was time to start better using some of these domains. I moved over just over 100 domains that have been dad or unused in the last two years. None of these was developed or promoted beyond possibly a single page with one external banner and no more than a paragraph of static content that was as stale as any content you have seen. Many of them were still shtml pages designed before I got into PHP and database driven sites.

It was actually pretty simple to move them over and Google of course offers detailed instructions on how to transfer DNS and Hosts records settings based on your registrar so you can be up and running in under 24 hours. It’s Google so we have no issue with trust or payments and they take care of serving up the best ads based on keywords you use and of course the domain name.

In the last week my earnings from the domains has averaged just below $10 per day which covers the registration fees on one domain. If it maintains the same pace for a full year I’ll be able to pay off two years of registration for the whole lot of domains each year until I either sell them or have time to build a new site. It’s not making me huge bucks but it’s not costing me anything as some of those domains were.

Dropped domains and the domain aftermarket is a post from: Affordable Web Pro

I have done just about everything there is to make money online but the best money maker I have are my premium domains. I bought up a whole slew of domains back in 2003 and I have sold of a limited number of them over time. The sites is sold I made good money on and I considered each sale the best deal I could get at the time.

My m ost recent sale was for more moving company and auto transport domains that I had. I sold 2 keyword .org domains for $6500 when I paid less than $10 per year for the last 5 years on each. I don’t know how much more I could have gotten for them and to be honest I have my doubts that domains will increase in value more than they have already.

I think we’ll see that other domains will start to make an impression and soon enough no one will care what your domain extension is for most websites. The premium dotcoms will go commercial and we’ll see those grow intro powerhouse businesses that explode with the internet as Web 3.0 approaches.

I have been looking to invest some of my domain profits back into my business and I have been buying dropped names and other domain auctions for undervalued domain bargains. I just bought ZuneHacks.com and Schweppes.org for a steal at low $XX each. The ZuneHacks domain is worth more to me just to tie in with my other Zune projects and should make a nice addition to my collection.

I found that one of the major domain auction sites actually has some deals if you know how to search it and its worth the time to search the bargain bins for domains.

I’m tired of having some domains that have been parked for over 2 years now as I was never able to get them all developed and now I want to go back and build out the rest of my domain portfolio. I need to hire a web savvy person locally to train to manage some of this work load for me because with over 500 domains and 350+ sites to manage I’m overwhelmed already.

I have been partial to building blogs lately and I guess I’ll probably keep doing the same thing with lots of new blogs for my keyword targeted domains. I’ll need some content writers to spin up some new articles for these blogs because I can’t write much more than I am already. I think I’m burned out and I have found many of my articles are starting to sound the same.

Anyone want to write a few thousand articles for me?

Domain trademarks for dummies is a post from: Affordable Web Pro

I own and manage a portfolio of over 500 domains many of which I have owned since 2002 or before. I bought my first domain in 1999 and over those years I have lost, traded or sold quite a few. If someone asked me what my business was I would say I am a domain investor first and site developer second. I began building websites just to pay for the domains I wanted to buy.

At one point in 2003 I discovered lots of traffic in domains with trademarks. I bought some domains like uhaulrental.com and rydermovingtrucks.com and built some websites on them. I scored big on the traffic but lost it all when the domains were taken from me by the trademark owners. I was wrong and I never even bothered to answer the complaint because I knew I was wrong.

Since then I no longer purchase domains with obvious trademarks in them but that has not stopped me from running into people that claim I am infringing on their trademarks with the use of my domains. In the 5 cases I can think of specifically each and every time someone cried to me about using their trademark in my domain I politely reminded them that having a trademark on a word doesn’t mean they own the word. I still have the rights to use any word I wish in any business class I wish so long as I don’t infringe on their actual trademark claims. You’ll be surprised at how many trademark holders are unaware of just what their trademark is and what it means.

Of these five cases each made the right choice and negotiated a price by which I would transfer the domain to them. The last two cases I dealth with the trademark holders legal team and it made things easier actually. There is now a new case related to a health domain I own and I’m dealing with the owner direct. The trademark holder owns KeywordDomainUSA.com where I own the KeywordDomain.com minus the USA. Why someone would bother to trademark the USA version without at least trying to buy the KeywordDomain alone makes little sense to me but so do most people with stupid trademarks and no idea how or why to enforce them.

I’m trying to get this guy to realize his best move is to make me an offer and that by fighting me all he does is risk losing any chances at the domain and more likely he will cost his company $1500 or more in fees to the WIPO and his lawyers. Any suggestions on how to convince them to just pay up and not fight it?

I’ve had a few directories online for quite some time now and I have always appreciated the geo specific capabilities of a directory. Recently I was approached to assist in marketing a large scale project and targeting a range of geo based keywords was a goal. IN order to achieve our best success I suggested we build an industry directory using my favorite directory script WSN links.

Since building the directory is so darn easy I actually bought a domain and put the site up as a demo to the client as an example of what I could do with a new site as opposed to trying to reinvent an old one. The idea proved so popular they bought the domain and the site and I am now responsible for promoting it and securing even better traffic than we have already seen.

Thats right the site was online for less than 2 weeks and never submitted in any location but it has already begun to naturally secure traffic on the keyword combinations I built into the directory categories. In just a few short weeks the site was already bringing in a few clicks each day for combinations such as “nj keyword” “kansas city keyword” “keywords in miami” and so forth. The primary corporate site is based in Georgia but the company provides an internationally viable service. Building a directory on the corporate domain was not the right idea for liability reasons and by having the new site driving traffic to the corporate site we actually now end up with more than one chance in the top ten.

If you’re trying to target geo specific keyword combinations consider a niche directory and the right categories for your next project.

Why have parked domains? Build quick and easy landing pages with Amazon Astore is a post from: Affordable Web Pro

I have always found it funny how many people have domains with no content and what I find even funnier are the number of domainers willing to share their domain revenues with registrars and parked pages programs. I see most of the traffic from a parked domain as coming from the type in value of the domain primarily and the idea of buying a domain and parking someones affiliate page on it so I can split the revenues on it just seems stupid on my opinion. I’m not a professional web designer but I can manage to slap a website up on any domain and push traffic to a custom tailored program.

Ihad about 50 domains that I recently purchased and had yet to build. They have been sitting for a few months and I was not looking to spend any money or much time in building them at all. I needed an idea and it came to me while looking over the collection of domains. I realized that many of them were products or ecommerce related so I thought about some simple shops to build. Full blown ecommerce sites are pretty easy to get up but loading quality content into them and delaying with customers this time of year had me rethink things. I knew I wanted to put something up fast so I jumped on Amazon and configured a bunch of Astore campaigns for the domains. I was able to build a store in just a minute or two for each domain.

I built a simple PHP page with an iframe including the Amazon storefront. I also added a couple of related rss feeds for some fresh updating content from some of my own wordpress blogs so I syndicated some of my content on parked domains and I’m using my own affiliate programs which give me 100% of my own revenue and no additional work to do but link build or add content.

Domain sales offers investment opportunity is a post from: Affordable Web Pro

I have a new deal in the works to sell some domains from our portfolio. The deal is for 6 domains and the price point looks like $8,000
for them all. There is also the possibility of an additional domain for $2,000 but this is not yet confirmed. I am however hopeful that I’ll have a $10,000 domain deal which will make for a good month indeed. I settled for a slightly lower price then the true value on these domains because I wanted to use the money as an investment in some other projects we have. I need to hire some a PHP MySql developer to help me with some improvements to our existing domain portfolio.

This deal came to me by chance and I sort of see it as free money at a time when I could use some cash for so many different things. The whole idea of having an extra $10,000 is a bit new to me personally and I have started wondering what to do with the money. I am currently debt free. All of my bills are paid up to date and I just paid the home insurance and property taxes. My credit cards are paid in full, I have no outstanding loans and my bank balance on current accounts is healthy enough that I will consider saving some of this for a rainy day but all of it should go back into to the business. I did have a Mortgage Broker contact me about a good deal on a home for sale but I turned it down. I plan to pay off some months on our dedicated server bills plus add an additional year to many of our domains. I will also add two or more years to some of the more important domains names.

I have learned a valuable lesson in dealing with Registerfly and that is to always have plenty time on domains and renew them not the month before but 13 months before always leaving a year on them at the minimum. That will use up quite a bit of money with over 400 domains to renew. I am going to do some text link advertising and boost the ranking on some new sites. Having a couple bucks to invest in site improvements should help cut out some of my work load and boost month revenues. I may consider selling off even more domains this year. It seems the market is hot and now is a good time to cash in some of our investment. Truthfully selling a domain always bothers me because I know the earning potential on some of these names if marketed properly and I am certain that premium domains will only increase in value over time.

Registerfly is finished! ICANN terminates their accreditation is a post from: Affordable Web Pro

I only hope this turns out well for everyone. I have a few domains at risk because of the ProtectFly whois protection service which basically has my domains in their name. A few of my domains are listed as belonging to Glenn at RegisterFly and I am concerned these won’t transfer. I have confirmed 38 of our requested 116 transfers are now complete. The rest are being held because the domains are on lock. I hope the ICANN announcement will get the domains released now because we have some to be sold and transfering them has been impossible.

The party is over for Kevin Medina. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced in a letter to Mr. Medina that RegisterFly will cease operating as an ICANN-Accredited Registrar on March 31, 2007.

ICANN also terminated RegisterFly’s right to use the ICANN Accredited Registrar logo on its website. The logo however is still visible in the left lower corner of RegisterFly’s homepage.
