I see it more as a half hearted attempt at a social network although it was an intelligent move from the start. I think they would do well to build on the relationships and content you can add and the built in Contacts

I have been back home in Marion County for a few months now and it’s time to realize the vacation is over and it is time to get back to work from home online. The bottom line is I am glad that 2009 is over. As far as I am concerned it was a bad year for business all over. I think we face a lot of competition in the online advertising industry and although there are more advertisers doing business on the web it seems they are spending less per ad spot. The average cost per click on my sites has dropped and I am making less money on all of my websites.

I think I first noticed the overall increase in competition back in 2006 when I got out of e-commerce and drop shipping because there were literally a zillion copy cat websites selling the same crap. I had scraper sites that were stealing my content that were ranking better than me in a top niche that used to be mine and mine alone and I’m seeing a lot of the same stuff again this year. Achieving a top ranking for two keyword phrases like “moving company” used to be much easier and today it’s even hard to get a good rank for the more targeted key phrase”fort lauderdale moving company” which is also probably easier to convert to a lead I can sell.

There is always money to be made online and I am sure people in the credit, foreclosure and careers niches are doing well with spikes in traffic but I missed out on that one. I have done very well over the years with the housing, relocation and home services markets which are taking a beating nationwide and the drop in traffic reflects the drop in my earnings on sites that have been consistent money makers for 6 or 7 years now. I remember being top ranked for the term modular homes in 2004 and 2005 and bringing in some heavy traffic. Today the same ranking is nice to have but nowhere nearly as profitable as it has been for me.

The relocation industry has always been a strong point in my portfolio but the decline in home sales has dried up all the leads I was able to generate and the earnings there are almost nonexistent now. I dropped some new projects I had planned in the moving and relocation industry because I don’t see much hope for changes in that market for at least two years.

Whats new? I think local seo is the way to go for 2010. I think I’ll rethink my ideas on not having clients and I’ll take on some local search marketing work with small business owners in Ocala Florida where we are living for the next two or more years. It has been three plus years since I last had clients and I don’t even know what I’ll be able to find for work locally but I know that spending on organic search optimization and pay per click campaign management is steadily moving up as website owners look for verifiable gains from their advertising budgets.

Google Dec. 7 unleashed perhaps its most significant search engine enhancements in years, adding real-time search results aggregated from Facebook, Twitter and MySpace and turning on its Google Goggles mobile visual search application in Google Labs.

Google Fellow Amit Singhal, the company’s resident expert for search algorithms, and Vic Gundotra, the vice president of engineering leading Google’s mobile charge, unveiled the new technologies at a media event at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif.

I’ve been a huge fan of Google since I was first introduced to the search engine as early as 1998. I just knew that access to information was key to the success of the internet and Google was right there with the most accurate results available.

Since then lots has changed online and new players like Facebook, Myspace and others are all vying to be your one in alll soplution to things online. Google has had the advantage for a long time but things may be shifting. facebook is putting up huge numbers and the number one social network is becoming a force to be recognized in the big eague world of online service providers.

I began to consider opening up my blog to new members by trying out one of the new login services available and chose to integrate both Facebook Connect and Google Friends Connect so that more of my friends can easily access my blog and websites for comments and possibly in the future to offer private or upgraded memberships to exclusive content.

Running this blog on the Wordpress platform makes it much easier to work with these new services and I was actually able to get both services to work with the existing installation. I must admit it was much easier to get the Google Friends Connect to work “out of the box” and with a simple Wordpress plugin I was up and running with some new commenting from my Google network.

Linking my Wordpress blog with Facebook Connect was a bit trickier and I have found some minor issues with logins to the site using this service. I was keen on the Facebook Connect integration because it should allow more fans and friends to share my blog content with other networks with the hopeful benefit of increasing our readership. I think Facebook is better suited for sharing and would be a better service for my website purpose of driving traffic and more users to our site network but it would help if it were a more fluid process. I think some better documentation from plugin writers is needed to explain exactly how to set these things up if more people are going to adopt the Connect service but it will most likely be the more popular as search engines become less important and social networks rise as the new go to source for instant information.

It’s Google Friend Connect vs. Facebook Connect – PC World

Just hours after Yahoo announced a planned implementation of Facebook Connect on its network of sites, Google announced that you can now use your Twitter credentials to register on Google Friend Connect sites. Friend Connect and Facebook Connect are both a means to quickly register for a site or service that requires a login, and it’s likely no coincidence they announced competing deals on the same day. This could end up being a hard fought battle, because there’s one major reason one-stop online identity is becoming important as we enter 2010, and that reason is paywalls.

It is the end of an era as far as internet marketing is considered. MarketLeap.com has offered a much valued and powerful suite of tools for search engine analysis that are being discontinued. I must admit it has been a few many months that I have used the service and I was unaware they had plans to abandon it.

MarketLeap was there back in 1999 when I needed a tool to compare links to and research keywords online. I used it with much respect for years and was actually sad to see it go when I logged in today and the tools where down. They suggest to try the tools at SeoMOZ but I will in fact miss the great reports at MarketLeap.com
